Thyroid Disorders (A Clinic Specialty)

Thyroid Disorders

According to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists,
more than 27 million Americans suffer from thyroid dysfunction. Of the detected
cases of hypothyroidism, 90% are due to an autoimmune disorder called
Hoshimoto’s disease in which the immune system attacks and destroys thyroid
gland tissue. Treatment with conventional western medicine involves synthroid
or other similar thyroid replacement medication as the sole means of disease
management. Sadly, nothing is done for their autoimmune disease and these
individuals slowly have their thyroid destroyed by their immune system. As this
destruction occurs there is a steady decline in their energy, mental function
gastrointestinal motility, and mood as well as many other symptoms. The second
most prevalent disorder is hyperthyroidism, or Graves’ disease, which also is
an autoimmune attack on the thyroid. This disorder results in hyper function of
the thyroid gland that can have serious cardiovascular consequences if left untreated.
This disorder is treated with medication or radiation to destroy thyroid tissue
while the underlying autoimmune condition is once again not addressed. But
there is much more that can be done to help thyroid sufferers. April combines
both the western approach with Chinese acupuncture, herbs and diet
modifications to halt the autoimmune disease in its tracks and, most importantly, restore quality
of life to many thyroid sufferers.

April recommends that
all thyroid sufferers read Datis Kharrazian’s book:  Why do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms when
My Lab Tests Are Normal?
